Kaposi's Sarcoma

This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library. Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) is a type of tumor characterized by bluish-red nodules on the skin or mucous membrane. Kaposi’s sarcoma was once a rare type of cancer. It now is the leading cancer among AIDS patients. Epidemiological evidence has suggested that an infectious agent is the probable cause of Kaposi’s sarcoma.  In 1994, the DNA of a new virus, human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) or Kaposi’s sarcoma associated human herpesvirus (KSHV) was found in samples of KS lesions. Evidence for a causative link between HHV-8 and Kaposi’s sarcoma is steadily accumulating.
