Biological Rhythms

This guide is an introductory list to help locate research materials at the Rowland Medical Library.  Biological rhythms are observed at all levels of living organisms, from photosynthesis in plants to the sleep-wake cycle in mammals. Biological rhythms can occur daily, monthly, or  seasonally.  Circadian rhythms are an important class of biological rhythms.  The length of circadian rhythms varies from species to species, but usually lasts approximately 24 hours. The suprachiamatic nucleus is located in the hypothalamus of the brain and is the circadian pacemaker in mammals. In the last thirty years, several significant gene discoveries have provided a greater understanding of the molecular basis of circadian rhythms.
